What to expect from your women’s wellness exam
The goal of a women’s wellness exam is to ensure your overall health and identify and treat any concerns as early as possible. They should be scheduled once a year with your primary care physician. Here’s what you can expect during the exam:
Reviewing your health habits and family history
At the beginning of your well-woman appointment, your doctor or advanced practice provider will discuss your overall health and determine any risk factors. You’ll talk about medical and obstetrical history, family health history, medication history, sexual health, reproductive health, mental health, eating habits, physical activity, and any prescription drug use.
Physical exam and diagnostic tests
Your physician will perform physical exams, lab tests and any immunizations that may be necessary depending on your current health and history. The goal is to prevent specific conditions or diseases and make sure to catch them early so they can be effectively treated.
Work with you to set health goals
Toward the end of your appointment, you and your provider will talk about how to ensure that you stay healthy on an ongoing basis. Diet, exercise habits, stress levels, medication and anything else relevant to your current health will be discussed.
